The English Legal System is the law set and followed by people in England and Wales.

The law was exported to countries within the commonwealth whilst the British Empire was being established.

The legal system follows common law, rather than civil law and was and has been in place since 1189. It involves judges sitting in court taking each case as it is found, applying their knowledge, common sense and legal precedent to the facts.

Criminal cases are resolved in court, where members of the general public evaluate the case to decide if the defendant is guilty or not guilty.

There are many courts in the English legal system, both criminal and civil. The highest court in the country is the House of Lords, which has power over all other courts within the heirarchy.

England and Wales are part of the United Kingdom, which is part of the European Union. The European Court of Justice is a civil court and can help guide Welsh and English courts on the meaning of the EU law.
