To be bereaved is to suffer the loss of a close relative or friend due to death. It is derived from the Old English word 'bereafian', reafian meaning 'to rob'. And death, is after all, the theft of a loved one. The death of a person brings out varied reactions from his relatives, with the ones closest to him often being the people who appear to be unable to cope with his departure from the mortal world. They can stop eating for days and months together, and might become aloof and reclusive. Humans by nature are not the strongest emotionally, and the sudden loss of a shoulder to lean on can hit them pretty hard.

Just as physical injuries take time to heal, the same applies to emotional ones too. Children with fragile minds are often the most difficult to deal with in such situations. They are unable to understand the concept of death, and at the same time, long for the presence of the departed person. If not handled carefully, the child can be traumatized, and will never be the same bubbly kid to the persons around him. In several cases, counselling can prove to be extremely helpful.

Those who eventually do manage to pick up the pieces of their life and move ahead, tend to have the look of a person who has suffered from various hardships. This is especially true in the case of battle hardened warriors.
