Interestingly, the very concept of space has triggered a great deal of scientific and philosophical speculation since times immemorial, and involves the inputs of lofty minds like Isaac Newton, Immanuel Kant, Schopenhauer and many others. As a consequence, multiple definitions of space have emerged. But it is noteworthy that none of these definitions exist outside its particular context.

To begin with, space, in the context of geography means land or property and thus has a direct association with the sense of ownership. This ownership not only includes land, public space and waters but in recent times also extends to airspace and cyberspace. According to a specific philosophical perspective, space is defined as a dimensional set where objects with shape and size are positioned in isolation and within which they are free to move about.

It is through measurement that physics attempts to define space and eventually links it up with the concept of time giving rise to a new idea called ‘space-time’. Mathematics identifies space as a set having certain special properties and within which the mathematical operations of addition and multiplication are conducted. However, as human beings, it is the anatomic definition of space that is bound to interest us the most. It is defined as an area within the human body comprising anatomic structures and limited by definite boundaries.
