The word owes its origin to Greek “Philosophia” which means wisdom derived from a friend. Essentially, “philos” in Greek means a lover or a friend and “Sophia” relates to wisdom. Philosophy is the ethical advice on life which a friend or lover usually imparts because they mean good to us. If we are studying Ethics which is a branch of Philosophy, it tells us how we have to live our life. Metaphysics, another branch goes on to discuss the existence of things and their natures while logic would teach us the correct ways of reasoning.

The definitions of Philosophy are highly controversial. A lot depends on the changed opinions of people along the passage of time. Philosophy is thus more than a theory, proposition or a claim. It is a method. Different philosophers have had different views and disagreements regarding the subject matter. Although the word philosophy originates from the tradition of the west, the philosophers believe that the traditions and other cultures have also looked at topics of the same interest in different ways. There are the Far East Philosophers who add their own views in the discipline called Eastern Philosophy.

The different philosophical doctrines are based on Romanticism, Pragmatism, Skepticism, Idealism, and Existentialism and so on. Philosophy branches out into the study of Logic, Ethics, Metaphysics, Ontology and Epistemology.
