The word trigonometry has Greek origins and is made up of two words i.e. triangle and measure. So basically trigonometry governs the mathematical operations relating to triangles. It helps to study, calculate, and verify relationships between sides and angles of the triangles and then to form conclusions based on these relationships. Trigonometry has a wide array of application in a number of fields predominantly astronomy.

The most commonly studied triangle under trigonometry is the right angle triangle. This is a triangle where one angle of the triangle is 90 degree. If one other angle is known, the third angle can be calculated.

The application of trigonometry is massive. Trigonometry has been essentially been in astronomy. It is used to calculate distances between stars; it is used to navigate satellites, airplanes, war crafts, ships. It can also be used to calculate distances between lands and thus helps in navigation. Another application of trigonometry in astronomy is when trigonometry is used to determine the relative or the exact position of stars, planets, solar systems.

Trigonometry is also used in physics. It is used while working with linear motion. It is also used in a variety of other fields such as chemistry, physics, engineering, commerce, computer sciences to name a few.
