The word Geometry has its roots in the Greek language. It is the combination of the two words geo and metria meaning ‘earth’ and ‘measure’ respectively. So geometry means measure of the earth and this is essentially what geometry really is. It is the study of distances, areas and sizes, shapes and the relative relation between them. It is probably one of the oldest of the sciences to be heavily investigated into.

Geometry is the prime example of how the evolution of human knowledge has helped to develop an understanding of the earth and its surroundings. Euclid was one of the revolutionists in the field of geometry. He used axioms to work with geometry and this opened doors for others to put forward their own theories. This included Descartes and Eules. Geometry was now used to work in much more complex planes. The internal structures of objects are now studied more comprehensively to help develop a better understanding of shapes and sizes.

Geometry has also had a major impact on Astronomy over the years. The current day understanding of earth and space and their relative relationship with each other is based on the knowledge base of geometry.
