The electrical understanding dates back to the 17th century when Otto von Guericke, a German physicist created the first electric generator producing static electricity through applying friction. Dovetailing Otto von’s invention was Charles François de Cisternay du Fay, a French chemist who discovered two different types of static electricity. He also came up the phenomenon of how the like charges repel each other and the unlike charges attract each other thereby introducing a two fluid theory of electricity. His theory was later opposed by Benjamin Franklin who instead came up with one – fluid theory. Since then many scientific inquiries in electrical field have been made. Finally in the year 1902, The Electrochemical Society based in the United States was founded to carry out an advanced search on electrochemistry.

Electrochemistry is studied as a branch of physical chemistry that deals with the electrochemical processes resulting from chemical reactions. These chemical reactions in turn produce electricity. Further electrochemistry also delves into understanding the chemical changes that occur through the production of electric current. Electrochemistry also finds its uses in other disciplines of science such as biology and engineering. Batteries, fuels and electroplating are just a few of the many applications introduced by electrochemistry.
