Health does not mean merely an absence of disease but also a total of physical, mental and social well-being. Good health means the capacity to lead a socially and economically productive life. There are four determinants of health – human biology, environment, and lifestyle and healthcare services. The progress and use of health science coupled with the efforts and lifestyle selection of the individual decide the health of an individual.

Physical fitness means good bodily health. This can be achieved by regular exercise, apt diet and nutrition and required rest for physical recovery. Mental health refers to the individual’s emotional and psychological fitness by which the cognitive and emotional capabilities can be used to fulfill the ordinary expectations of daily life and to function in society. Some symptoms of good mental health are a sensation of capability and competency, ability to manage normal levels of stress and strain, continue good relationships, leading an independent lifestyle and ability to recover from difficult situations. The emotional, physical and social aspects work together to attain good, complete health.

Nutrition is the study of the effect of the food on health. For example, an excess of calories leads to obesity while fibrous foods decrease the risk of colon cancer. Deficiency, excess or imbalance in food can lead to disease or psychological and behavioral problems. Sports nutrition aims at maintaining glycogen levels and to optimize energy levels and muscle tone. Exercise is very crucial to prevent diseases like obesity, back pain, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart disease and cancer. Flexibility exercises make the range of motion of muscles and joints better. Aerobic exercises improve cardiovascular endurance and muscle density. Anaerobic exercises improve muscle mass and strength. Hygiene means to keep the body clean so that infection and illnesses are avoided. This encompasses washing hands periodically, bathing, brushing and flossing teeth and sterilizing food preparation utensils.
